Between Stones and Lessons: A Holiday Story

Updated: Apr 10

While driving to a construction in a residential complex this week, I encountered two boys around seven years old. They waved, seemingly wanting to ask a question or offer something. Since I was short on time to arrive promptly at my appointment, and the boys were OK, and in a safe place, I just signaled that I couldn't stop at that moment. I promised myself that if they were still there on my way back, I would stop for a chat.

Fulfilling my promise, about 20 minutes later, I passed by the same spot. I asked them from a distance, "Would you like to ask me something?"

"Yes," one of them replied. "We're selling."

"Selling what?" I asked, curious.

"Stones," one of them seriously replied, taking on the role of spokesperson while opening his hands and proudly displaying a stone, likely picked from a nearby garden. At that moment, both he and his colleague ran towards me.

Trying to maintain the seriousness of the conversation and disguise a smile at receiving such an offer, I disappointedly responded, "Unfortunately, I don't have anything here." - I mostly use digital payments and rarely carry cash or coins.

"No problem. It can be anything," the boy replied, hoping I might have at least a small coin to offer.

"Unfortunately, I don't have anything," I reaffirmed. To avoid more significant disappointment, I quickly added, "Do you live here in the complex? Will you be here tomorrow?"

The boy said yes, and driven by curiosity, I tried to delve further into the purpose of their sale - but they had already turned their backs and ran to approach the next car passing by. The next day, around the same time, the two were not there for some reason. Perhaps they had moved on to a new venture or decided to enjoy the holidays, like most children!

This simple story brings some valuable lessons:

• Courage: The boys showed that we all have something unique to offer and should have the courage to show it to the world.

• Persistence: They believed in the value of their "stones," highlighting the importance of persistence in our beliefs and efforts.

• Open to Negotiation: Their willingness to negotiate underscores the importance of being open to different types of exchange and negotiation.

These young entrepreneurs reminded me that courage and belief in one's values are essential in personal life and business.
