End-of-the-year syndrome: Balancing Joy and Stress

Updated: Apr 10

As December 1st marks the countdown to 2024, along with the excitement of celebrations comes the 'End-of-the-Year Syndrome,' a term encapsulating the varied emotions experienced during this period. It's not a clinical diagnosis but rather a reflection of the stress, fatigue, and diverse feelings many encounter as the year concludes.

This time of year elicits mixed reactions. Some people dive into the festivities with vigor, adorning their homes with Christmas decorations as early as November, eagerly planning gifts and gatherings, and brimming with energy for the new year. Others find themselves indifferent, occasionally bothered by the surrounding hustle and bustle.

Then, some feel overwhelmed by the pressure of year-end goals, frustrated by the slower pace of business dealings, and exhausted by the continuous stream of celebrations. Crowded spaces and long lines only add to their distress.

I resonate with a blend of these emotions. I'm not swept up in the consumption frenzy and often delay holiday preparations. The challenge of accessing regular services during this busy season can be irritating, and I lean towards simpler, more contemplative celebrations. In Brazil, where our warm climate contrasts the traditional wintry Christmas imagery, I advocate for a celebration style that aligns better with our weather – think lighter Santa attire and a less calorie-dense feast. Yet, the friend and familial bonding and the opportunity to reflect on this season's deeper, symbolic aspects remain invaluable. Amidst the chaos, I focus on reorganizing, planning for the new year, and practicing gratitude.

This article (https://lnkd.in/dKdRzUAH) lists some suggestions to make the best of this time:

- Manage your mindset by considering things and reframing experiences to find humor or gratitude.

- Ease expectations by setting clear boundaries and focusing on what truly matters.

- Pump up the fun by scheduling enjoyable activities and traditions.

- Make a great wait using waiting times (like in traffic or lines) as mindfulness or gratitude exercise opportunities.

- Schedule time for self-care and emphasize the importance of regular sleep, good nutrition, and exercise.

How does this season affect you? I'd love to hear your thoughts and strategies for balancing the holiday cheer with professional commitments.
