From Gratitude to Inspiration: A Look at the Achievements of 2024

The countdown to 2025 has already begun. At this time of year, it's common to experience both excitement and exhaustion in extra doses. The pressure to complete the goals set at the beginning of the year, combined with the marathon of family, professional, and social commitments, often places us in the role of jugglers. We fit everything into already packed schedules, which forces us to prioritize some activities over others.

This symbolic moment of the year's transition can bring anxiety as if the promises made in January must be fulfilled by the very last minute of December. It's not uncommon to feel a tinge of frustration when that doesn't happen.

Last year, I wrote about the "End of Year Syndrome," a phenomenon tied to this mix of emotions so characteristic of this season: End of Year Syndrome: Balancing Joy and Stress.

Today, I'd like to complement those insights with a more positive and reflective approach. Of course, it's essential to take stock of our goals — what was or wasn't achieved, and even examine the reasons behind any deviations. However, I believe we can draw more energy and motivation by focusing on the year's accomplishments as an exercise in gratitude, celebration, and, why not, compassion — especially self-compassion.

Achievements don't need to be grand. Often, small milestones in our daily lives bring about significant transformations. For example:

  • That hobby you started (or returned to);

  • A skill you developed or improved;

  • Connections you made, whether personal or professional;

  • Quality time spent with your family or friends;

  • Lessons learned that changed your perspective on something;

  • A loved one's achievement that you were privileged to witness;

  • Contributions or support you provided to help others grow;

  • A challenge you faced and overcame, even if not perfectly.

Though these moments may seem simple, they are just as valuable as major professional or personal milestones. They help us move forward, grow, and bring meaning to our lives. In fact, these moments most frequently weave through our days, bringing oxygen, quality, and humanity to existences that often feel like they don't fit into the 24 hours available each day.

As we look ahead and plan for 2025, I encourage everyone to revisit their accomplishments in 2024. Why not seize this opportunity to start a Gratitude Journal? Acknowledging where we've been helps us define where we want to go. And most importantly, it reminds us that every step matters. I'm often inspired by a phrase I once saw during a trip: "Every step I've taken in my life has brought me here, now."

What about you? What were the moments, big or small, made 2024 a special year in your life? Start your reflection now!
