Book Review: 'Make Your Bed' by Admiral William H. McRaven

Updated: Apr 10

Harnessing resilence

In my continuous endeavor to balance profound, technical literature and lighter, more digestible reads, I recently delved into "Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life...And Maybe the World" by Admiral William H. McRaven. The book was inspired by a commencement address at the University of Texas, where McRaven is the Chancellor, drawing from his extensive 37-year tenure as a Navy SEAL.

The SEALs, an embodiment of the elite military known for their high-stakes missions, set the stage for McRaven's anecdotes. These stories testify to physical and mental endurance and serve as a canvas for the broader life lessons McRaven imparts.

One chapter that particularly caught my attention was Chapter 5 - "Failure Can Make You Stronger." In this chapter, McRaven shares his experiences with the "Circus," a punishing two-hour extension of exercises meted out for any shortcomings in daily tasks. This relentless cycle of exhaustion led many to relinquish their SEAL aspirations. However, through their determination, McRaven and his swim partner discovered that this seemingly punitive measure forged unparalleled strength and resilience. This transformation was profoundly evident as they outshone their peers in the final swimming exercise of the SEAL training.

"Make Your Bed" transcends the confines of military narratives, emerging as a beacon for introspection and personal growth. Each chapter invites the reader to reflect and emerge fortified and empowered even in extreme situations.
