Join the Journey to 100: Learning from the Blue Zones on Netflix

Updated: Apr 10

This week, I wrapped up the fascinating Netflix series, "Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones," where writer and cycling record-holder Dan Buettner delves into the mysteries of the Blue Zones. These zones – including Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Nicoya (Costa Rica), Ikaria (Greece), and Loma Linda (USA) – are remarkable for their high concentrations of centenarians living healthily and actively. However, these longevity oases face challenges as fast food and modern conveniences permeate these areas.

In the series finale, Buettner applies his findings in an American town and visits Singapore. Here, the government nudges its citizens towards healthy eating, physical activities, community engagement, reduced car usage, and close-knit family living.

While some of Dan's discoveries are well-known, I'd like to highlight a few critical aspects explored by this series:

1. Physical Activities: Many centenarians live in challenging terrains or environments encouraging natural movement – like the low-table lifestyle in Okinawa that resembles daily squatting. Gardening, farming, and even sports like tennis contribute significantly to their longevity.

2. Social Life: Relaxation and leisure with friends and family are crucial. In Okinawa, the concept of 'moais' – supportive social groups – plays a vital role. A balanced, joyful mind and stress management, including volunteer work, are equally important.

3. Life Purpose: The Japanese concept of 'ikigai' and Costa Rica's 'Plan de Vida' – both translating to a vigorous life purpose – is essential for waking up with daily motivation.

4. Diet: The dietary habits in these zones include a low-protein diet rich in vegetables and herbs. Handmade wine, pasta, and bread made with natural fermentation and whole grains play a significant role in their diet. These traditional food practices, emphasizing natural processes and ingredients, contribute to their overall health and longevity.

The last episode is especially intriguing as it narrates the inspiring story of a Greek elder from Ikaria. Diagnosed with cancer at the age of 66, he faced a grim prognosis. However, defying expectations, he lived after 100.

The series is a lot in line with the insights provided by Dr. Sanjay Gupta in the book "Sharp Mind." This book offers insights into maintaining an active and healthy brain at any age. However, the series doesn't touch upon sleep quality directly, a vital aspect explored in the book.

As we embark on a new year, let's seize this moment to reevaluate our lifestyle choices and initiate our '100-Year-Healthy-Life Project', where we adopt transformative habits that enhance our lives and reinforce the beneficial practices we already follow.
