I am frequently invited to virtual coffee meetings by individuals interested in kickstarting their careers in project management and seeking guidance, including information about Project Management Institute (PMI) certifications. Some are entering the workforce for the first time, while others are transitioning from different careers. I am both honored by these invitations and delighted to contribute in some way to people's development.
My career in project management has evolved alongside my longstanding volunteer work with PMI São Paulo and Project Management Institute - PMI. So, in this article, I will share some of my experiences based on this context, but not restricted to it. I want to emphasize that the points I present here represent my personal opinions and views, not those of any organization, including PMI.
This article aims to put into writing some of the insights I regularly share with those seeking advice. I hope that not only people interested in this topic can benefit from it, but as well as the ones starting a new career in other areas, as some of the points I will share may apply to different knowledge areas.
I also invite colleagues who are already on the path of project management to contribute their perspectives, enriching this article and adding even more value to my future contributions.
I want to clarify that, despite codifying the insights from my conversations in writing, I remain open to invitations for more virtual coffees! :-) It's always a pleasure to meet and converse with people, exchanging experiences and perspectives.
Why Embark on the Project Management Path?
I won't dwell on this point, but it's essential that, before anything else, professionals evaluate their motivations for choosing project management. While the responsibilities of a Project Manager might seem obvious to some, they often require clarification (one of my aunts jokes that, no matter how much I explain, she still doesn't quite understand what I do!).
PMI has a webpage that explains what it means to be a Project Manager: PMI - Who Are Project Managers. On this page, is mentioned a quick fundamentals course called "Kick-off," which is friendly, interactive, and interesting to explore.
Some Initial Information
Before we continue, I'd like to provide some context regarding the Project Management Institute. This non-profit organization, founded in 1969 and headquartered in the United States, has local representations in various countries, known as Chapters. Currently, there are over 300 chapters worldwide, with 15 in Brazil.
Although PMI is strongly associated with the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and its well-known publication, the PMBOK, it offers a wide range of services to its members. These services include not only certifications but also courses, events, publications, and much more.
It's worth noting that this institution is constantly evolving to keep up with industry trends and understand the diverse needs of project management professionals and the market.

First Steps in the Project Management Career
If you're taking your first steps in project management (or even in other specialty areas) and want to know where to start gathering information, I suggest some strategies that I believe are important. Here are a few:
Follow Thought Leaders in the Field: Many highly qualified project management professionals regularly share relevant content on their websites and social media, especially on LinkedIn and YouTube. There's a wealth of excellent free materials available. Follow these thought leaders and dive deeper into the topics they share.
Take Online Introductory Courses: If you choose to invest financial resources in this initial stage, there are many quick introductory courses available on e-learning platforms that provide a solid foundation.
Search for a Nearby PMI Chapter: Look for PMI chapters in your area to facilitate interaction and gain knowledge about the services they offer, including events. Actively participate in your local chapter. You can search for chapters here: PMI Chapters.
Become a PMI Volunteer: Volunteering for PMI is a wonderful and altruistic opportunity to contribute your knowledge and skills to the project management community. It's also a great way to learn and network. Find volunteering opportunities here: PMI Volunteer Opportunities.
Attend Events: Participating in events specific to this field will provide you with a good understanding of relevant topics. There are many online events, often free, focusing on specific subjects. I am currently a team member of the PMI Chapter Xchange initiative, which promotes monthly and open events, that feature international speakers and panelists – follow the #pmichapterxchange for being aware of future events. Additionally, Chapters host seminars covering a wide range of relevant topics. These events offer opportunities to connect with other professionals and thought leaders.
Expand Your Network: On professional social networks, seek out project management professionals, review their profiles and areas of expertise, and connect with those with whom you believe you have synergy and who could potentially contribute to your development. Events are also excellent for exchanging experiences and making new contacts.
Explore the PMI Website and Chapter Websites: The PMI website is rich in references. Members have access to a wealth of content, such as publications and articles. There are also various highly interesting events, such as the Virtual Series. Chapters also publish many of their initiatives, including events and courses.
Certifications in Project Management
Most individuals who reach out to me are interested in information about the Project Management Professional - PMP certification. It is important to mention that there are several certifications available in project management, and PMI currently offers 24 different certifications.
PMI's certifications are rigorous and vary based on experience and specific subjects (e.g., agile certifications or specializations such as risk and scheduling). Visit the PMI Certification Framework page for details on each certification, including formal education requirements, experience, and exam information.
Before deciding on certification, evaluate how it will contribute to your professional role and relevance to your area of expertise. I view certification as a rich learning journey and a means to deepen your knowledge, acquire new skills, and assess your proficiency within the context of evaluation, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement.
Regarding preparatory courses, many reputable companies offer them in the market. For Brazilian professionals who speak English, there are also remote preparation options, which may better suit your scheduling flexibility needs (see my LinkedIn article on my experience with the PMI-ACP certification: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/my-pmi-acp-agile-certified-practitioner-journey-priscila). In any case, it's always essential to seek references, recommendations, and reviews of these courses. Additionally, you can explore Authorized Training Partners (ATPs) on the PMI website.
Conclusion: Engage and Connect with the Project Management Community
I hope this article has shed light on the beginning of your journey in project management and provided initial insights into certifications, especially those offered by PMI.
I encourage you to take the first step toward your exciting journey in project management. Don't hesitate to connect with like-minded professionals, ask questions, and seek guidance. Join LinkedIn groups dedicated to project management, follow thought leaders for ongoing insights, and engage in conversations about the latest industry trends.
To kickstart your journey or discuss any questions you may have, feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn.
