Managing Anxiety: Understanding Its Role and Redefining Its Impact

It is a fact that the level of collective anxiety has been on the rise. This trend is well-documented in numerous articles and discussions, particularly exacerbated during the early years of the pandemic.

Anxiety triggers both physical and emotional reactions that can cloud our judgment and disrupt our control over responses. Ultimately, it can diminish our performance across personal and professional spheres and often hinder taking more significant risks and innovating. Typically, anxiety is pointed out as something negative.

There are various techniques and methods to manage anxiety levels, such as meditation, yoga, and mindfulness. Some time ago, I wrote about my insights from Nick Trenton's book, "Stop Overthinking: 23 Techniques to Relieve Stress, Stop Negative Spirals, Declutter Your Mind, and Focus on the Present." This resource offers valuable tips for managing emotions that negatively impact our lives—book Review on Stop Overthinking.

However, it is crucial to recognize that anxiety has a positive aspect; it is a survival mechanism that prepares us to react to threats and can be harnessed as a tool for our benefit.

Wendy Suzuki's TED Talk on managing anxiety delves into this topic, exploring scientifically proven techniques for anxiety management, such as breath control and physical movement. Watch Wendy Suzuki's TED Talk on Managing Anxiety.

Dr. Suzuki describes that self-awareness is critical to proactively recognizing and analyzing the signs of anxiety (e.g., shaking, sweating, or a knot in your stomach) to manage it effectively and understand the underlying reasons for these signals so that appropriate actions can be taken.

She concludes that this knowledge is also valuable for fostering empathy, allowing us to recognize anxiety signs in others and provide support accordingly.
