Frequently, I see a van parked near my house. But it's not just any vehicle; it's a "mobile pet service," offering grooming services directly at the client's home.
The pet market is constantly growing, which is no longer surprising. According to Global Market Insights (https://lnkd.in/dfdgjX4m), the global market value for pet products and services was estimated at $246 billion in 2022, with expected continued growth in the coming years. In the United States alone, spending on pet Halloween costumes reached $490 million in 2022 (https://lnkd.in/dCJ3sank).
What catches my attention about the "mobile pet service" is not just that it's a differentiated offering in the vast pet market but also that it reflects the growing demand for convenience. Consumers across all industries are becoming increasingly demanding when receiving products and services at home. Thus, companies face the challenge of adjusting their strategies, particularly in logistics, to meet this demand.
A McKinsey & Company study discusses the same-day delivery model (https://lnkd.in/du6bjrcN). Consumers value not only speed but also reliability, which can be provided, for example, through quality tracking information. Additionally, the study highlights innovations like autonomous vehicles, which face significant challenges, such as urban regulations.
The "mobile pet service" reminded me of Zume, a U.S.-based startup that employed robots to make pizzas and baked the products in vans during the delivery route. Despite the innovative idea and attracting significant investments, the company failed in 2023, partly due to complaints about the quality of the pizzas. This example illustrates the challenges of balancing innovation with quality.
Today, the customer experience results from a complex equation involving efficiency, convenience, and quality. Companies are increasingly challenged to balance costs, logistics, quality, and consumer trust in their brands. The "mobile pet service" is a simple example of the importance of thinking differently in business to meet consumers' growing and demanding expectations.
